Hulgnist er en teknik, der især bliver brugt til fremstilling af starthuller for trådgnist, men er også uundværlig i fremstillingen af f.eks. finmekaniske komponenter med meget små huller – kølehuller i borende/skærende værktøjer samt egentlig produktion af mindre huller.
